HOSSFLY Officers present checks to Samuel Clardy and Jim Franks of the GCRL. Proceeds from our 2016 charity event equaled $1800 in donations to programs at the Lab. Many thanks to TFO, The Lodge at Cat Island and all those friends and members who donated to and purchased at our event. Great job everybody!
The weather and fishing have been tough recently, but Spring is coming! Our big trip was shortened by a couple of days, but we still caught a few nice fish and “cooned” some awesome oysters! Even Richard had a hard time that weekend, but he’s had some success too! Here is a pic of Rich and friend with two big bulls that they doubled up on earlier in the month. Both fish were released to fight another day. That Richard is a bad man with a fly rod! We’ll try to find some pictures of those oysters for y’all.
Several members spent the last weekend in January out at the Pelican. All reports indicated a great trip with lots of huge reds caught. Pretty big grins in this photo! Don’t forget to share your photos and reports for the website and the newsletter!
Mike and Anita made a recent trip to the Florida Keys. They sent lots of details and photos, but we don’t want to give them all away here! Come by our next meeting and check out our next newsletter to get the scoop.
We have had some great trips out to the Chandeleur Islands in November and December. Send us a photo at email@example.com and watch here and in our newsletter for more pictures and reports!
Mid July – Leon and Jeff took tarpon trips to Carrabelle, FL last month. No tarpon boated on the first trip, but Leon returned a few days later with his son and had a record trip with a number of big fish hooked, jumped and boated!
Todd and Jeff had a couple of good trips October 2-5. Dozens of trout under the lights and sight fishing reds during the day near Bayou la Batre. The reds were in groups of 10-20., teaming up to scare shrimp and crabs out of the grass. We were sometimes close enough to hear the shrimp flipping out of the water! We kept only a few fish for the pan and released the others in good condition.
Leon and friend Tom Dempsey made a trip to the Biloxi Marsh on October 18. They caught reds and black drum in spite of murky and windy conditions. Tom is a leading member in the Alabama clubs and a CCI who has considerable experience in the Marsh. He also volunteered at the GCC Fly Fishing Fair, as did Leon. Thanks again, guys! We need to get Tom to visit with us at a HOSSFLY meeting soon!
