Introductory Fly Tying Workshop

Saturday, March 12 at OSYC at 11:00 am – Mike Sharpe will hold a fly tying lesson. What you will learn here are the basic principles of tying. You will become confident and knowledgeable to tie your own flies with practice tying these and some of our other basic patterns. Always a good time. The bar should be open and fly tying always goes better with an adult beverage!

MCFF Bream Tournament

gccfff pr breamOur friends in the Mississippi Coast Fly Fishers have invited us to participate in their annual bream tournament. It is scheduled for Saturday, May 21 – at “Your Mamma’s Place” – on nearby waters – $25 entry – po’boy dinner included – a good time! Rumor has it that Mike and Anita Arguelles participated and “placed” among the anglers last year! We need to turn out and “represent” for HOSSFLY. Details and rules for the tournament can be found at www.gcflyfishers.org. Big thanks to MCFF for including us and watch for further details.

Success at Bayou la Batre

Todd and Jeff had a couple of good trips October 2-5.  Dozens of trout under the lights and sight fishing reds during the day near Bayou la Batre.  The reds were in groups of 10-20.,  teaming up to scare shrimp and crabs out of the grass. We were sometimes close enough to hear the shrimp flipping out of the water!  We kept only a few fish for the pan and released the others in good condition.

We kept a few and released most of the specks.

Leon and friend Tom Dempsey made a trip to the Biloxi Marsh on October 18. They caught reds and black drum in spite of murky and windy conditions. Tom is a leading member in the Alabama clubs and a CCI who has considerable experience in the Marsh. He also volunteered at the GCC Fly Fishing Fair, as did Leon. Thanks again, guys! We need to get Tom to visit with us at a HOSSFLY meeting soon!
